There still remains little knowledge on the influence of grading capacitor on the dielectric breakdowns of the double-break vacuum circuit breaker. The objective of this paper is to determinate the influence of grading capacitors on dielectric breakdown of a double-break vacuum circuit breaker. A prototype of double-break vacuum circuit breaker was built up as a U-type configuration with two 10 kV vacuum interrupters. The prototype is stressed by a power frequency withstand voltage and a standard lightning impulse withstand voltage, respectively. The BIL breakdown voltage U50 is obtained by an up-and-down method. Five grading capacitance are designed. One is with no grading capacitors, which is as a benchmark. Four cases are with 100 pF, 500 pF, 1500 pF, and 10 nF.
