To date, researches on electromagnetic repulsion mechanisms (ERMs) are drawing more and more attention globally. However, there remains little knowledge on design of the ERMs higher than 12 kV vacuum circuit breakers. The objective of this paper is to present the development of an optimized ERM on 40.5 kV vacuum circuit breaker. Result shows that three impact factors are the prominent factors, which can significantly affect the performance of the ERM. These factors include the coil turns (N), the energy-storage capacitor(C), and the charging voltage (V). The dependence of an operating velocity (v) on the three above factors is obtained by performing a nonlinear fitting and a regression analysis. The other impact factors include: the height of the coil (H), the inner radius (r) and the outer radius (R) of the coil, the thickness (T) and the diameter (D) of the metal plate, and the initial air gap (δ) between the coil and the metal plate. The effect of the above six impact factors are studied. An optimum solution is achieved by taking the cost problem into account. The optimum parameters of the 40.5 kV ERM are with the charging voltage of 700 V, the storage capacitance of 20 mF and coil turns of 15. The optimized ERM is demonstrated on a prototype of 40.5 kV vacuum circuit breaker.
