Study on Lightning Overvoltage Protection Methods for UHV GIS Substation with Different Lightning Types

In the research of lightning protection in UHV substation, overvoltage will cause serious damage to the substation when the transmission line enters the lightning strikes. So it is necessary to study the lightning overvoltage of the substation. In this paper, when the counterattack or the shielding failure strikes, the overvoltage of a UHV substation GIS in different operating modes is calculated by comparing and analyzing the different types of arrester configuration. In the ATP-EMTP simulation environment, the 1000kV GIS substation incoming line and the substation are regarded as the integrated simulation model. And the GIS transient model of the key equipments such as pole tower, high voltage reactor and transformer are established under the lightning impulse. Then, the lightning intrusion overvoltage on the main equipment of the substation is studied. The results show that the probability of counterattack is 0.144%, and the probability of shielding failure is 23.6%. Under the same conditions, compared with counterattack, the probability of shielding failure and the overvoltage amplitude produced on the main transformer are higher. The outlet section and the high resistance share a set of arrester, and the main transformer installs a set of arrester to meet the equipment insulation margin requirement. The research results can provide reference for the arrester configuration of the station, and provide the theoretical basis for the lightning overvoltage protection of the UHV AC substation.
