The total radiation loss from fault arc burning between copper electrodes in the enclosed air container has been investigated experimentally and theoretically. Such losses has been measured by a thermopile sensor with very flat wavelength response. The semi-empirical model based on NEC is employed to compute the radiation transport in fault arc. By comparing the calculated and measured radiation and pressure rise, the influence of different starting temperatures of re-absorption layer in the semi-empirical model on pressure rise is analyzed to determine a suitable α for fault arc calculation, where is an adjusted coefficient about starting temperature of re-absorption layer. The results show that the radiation re-absorption effect affects the energy transport of fault arc severely, and hence the internal pressure rise. The semi-empirical model with 0.7<α<0.83 is more suitable to the calculation of fault arc. However, with the influence of metal vapour on NEC taken into account, the range of α tends to increase and changes to 0.83-0.9.
