The development of advanced DC interruption technologies is steadily gaining interest with the short-circuit capacity increasing in modern interconnected DC systems. In this paper, a review of our recent developments in DC switching technologies for high current electrical systems is presented, which involves air DCCB, mechanical DCCB and hybrid DCCB. After a brief introduction of the fundamental principles for DC interruption, the prototypes of 1.8kV/110kA and 4kV/70kA air DCCB are given, in which the simulation and test results are analyzed in detail. Meanwhile, the prototypes of 10kV mechanical DCCB are presented and compared, which focus on the current commutation characteristic and its key factors. Furthermore, a new topology of hybrid HVDC circuit breaker is investigated, in which the calculation of interruption process is accomplished for different voltage levels and all results are compared under technical and economical aspects. Finally, the applicable occasions for different DC switching technologies and new solutions for future DC interruption are discussed.
