The objective of this work is to determine the anode spot threshold heat flux density for different contact material in high current vacuum arc. Both experiment and numerical simulation are conducted in this work. In the experiment, the anode spot threshold current of different contact material were determined. In the numerical simulation, a 3-D magnetohydrodymanic model are adopted to describe vacuum arc, and the critical heat flux density at the anode spot threshold current is obtained in the simulation result. The results reveal the relationship between the critical heat flux density and the thermal characteristics of contact material.
