With its high performance in reaction and opening velocity, the electromagnetic repulsive mechanism has been widely applied in fast disconnectors of MVDC circuit breaker. To analyze the motion characteristics of a repulsive mechanism, a finite element field-circuit coupled dynamic model was established in this study. By fitting with the test results, the buffer coefficient was obtained and the oil buffer equation was then determined. Subsequently, the buffering processes under different initial velocities were simulated and analyzed. Thus, using repulsive force and buffer coefficients, the dynamic characteristics of the whole mechanism opening process were simulated. The design efficiency and the simulation accuracy were proved by the prototype test. This study may provide a reference to the high-speed switch design and optimization.
