Transfer time denotes as a parameter, from the voltage breakdown to the initiation of high current, in a full-voltage making test of a circuit breaker. It is specified both in the international standard IEC 62271-100 and the national standard GB/T 4473-2008 that the transfer time must be lower than 300 μs during the making process. However, the transfer time presents varied characteristics even in a direct test procedure. Occasionally, it lasts for more than 300 μs in the full-voltage making test of a vacuum circuit breaker. Nowadays, there remains little knowledge on the variation of the transfer time. The objective of this paper is to explore the mechanism of the variation of the transfer time. Both a synthetic test circuit and a direct test circuit are used to perform the full-voltage making test on a test circuit breaker. The test circuit breaker used in this investigation includes a vacuum circuit breaker and a SF6 circuit breaker at 110 kV voltage level.
