Basin-type insulators are major insulating components in GIS(Gas Insulated Switchgear), and have significant influence on the performance and reliability of the equipment. Many studies focused on the mechanical strength and environmental adaptability since the application of basin-type insulator. The current standards and technical specifications mainly evaluate the influence of ambient temperature changing in slow rate on the mechanical strength through temperature cycle test; however, the ambient temperature may change rapidly in the process of storage, transportation and operation; therefore, due to the lack of deep research on this situation, the influence of thermal shock on mechanical strength of basin-type insulator is still not clear. In this paper, a kind of thermal shock test was designed and the effect of quickly changing temperature on the mechanical strength of basin-type insulator was analyzed through simulation and experiment on a typical-structure basin-type insulator. The result shows that the hydraulic fracture strength of the basin-type insulator that endured the thermal shock test is about 30% lower compared to those without thermal shock test, indicating that thermal shock test has obvious influence on the mechanical properties of basin-type insulator; therefore, it is necessary to take measures to prevent rapidly changing ambient temperature, and to consider its influence on basin-type insulator in the process of designing, manufacturing, storage, operation and maintenance of the product.
