Each year, assets like transmission line equipment and structures experience failures that cause power outages. There is a need to continuously monitor the critical structures of the electric grid to avoid these outages. Sensors do not exist to monitor the condition of these assets and report on incipient failures allowing for predictive maintenance and outage avoidance. This paper will review plans underway to improve asset management of the non-monitored structures and hardware of the electric transmission grid. The collaborative development project brings together academia, industry and manufacturing expertise. The Team has developed a conceptual model of technology that applied to the transmission infrastructure would evolve asset management to predictive management of all transmission structures. The proposed network of IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) sensors will provide individual structure prescriptive evaluation to continuously monitor equipment deterioration, mechanical degradation, vandalism, and structure integrity in a grid edge computing network.
