Reservoir landslides are one of the main types of geohazards. In China, over 4,000 landslides are distributed in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA), posing a severe threat to the operation of Three Gorges project. The extensive attention being paid to the landslide induced geohazards in the TGRA from scientists around the world and tens of billions of RMB has been invested by Chinese government in financing the research on landslides prevention and control.
Since the 1980s, China University of Geosciences (CUG) has been committed to the research and practice related to the geohazards in TGRA,and especially conducted a systemic study on the landslide in reservoir, leading to remarkable promotion of knowledge about the evolution law of reservoir landslide hazards. In 2008, funded by the Chinese government, the CUG set up Three Gorges Research Center for Geohazard (TGRC), which was included within framework of a “985 project”. Based on the Badong field test site, the aim of TGRC is to carry out long-term on-site monitoring and discipline-crossing study on TGRA-oriented landslides and to serve as an integrated platform for scientific research, personnel training, communication and collaboration in the geohazards field.
Badong field test site is located in Huangtupo landslide that is of maximum volume and of greatest danger among landslides in Badong new county, Hubei Province. In this landslide we pioneered the practice of excavating large-scale tunnels inside the landslide body for the purpose of conducting in situ geological surveys, scientific experiments and long-term monitoring, thus attracting experts from more than 50 institutes and universities around the world to field test site for research exchanges and project cooperations.
Aiming to provide a platform for exchange of ideas and discussions on topics related to the prevention and control of geological disasters and geological environment protection, the first Badong International Geohazards Symposium (BIGS) will be held in Badong County in TGRA, Hubei Province, China from August 25-28, 2017. BIGS is hosted by China University of Geosciences and sponsored by the Government of Badong County.Researchers who are interested in these areas are most welcome to join the Symposium, and we hope that the Symposium will bring together scientists and engineers to exchange ideas, experiences and share research advance on geohazards in order to promote academic development.
