Introduction

By 2020, over 20 billion devices will be communicating, representing an economic added value of $1.9 trillion, according to Gartner. The next industrial revolution, known as Industry 4.0, is underway. Its main objective is to increase global competitiveness through quality products and low production costs. The establishment of "smart factories“ and “smart services” will offer greater flexibility in operations and more efficient allocation of resources, paving the way for agile manufacturing and scalable logistics solutions. Networks will become integrated with unified skills and real-time information exchange.
Thus, the complexity of systems is becoming more and more important and requires more sophisticated market offers. The number of robots ever more intelligent and adaptable has doubled in Europe since 2004. People and machines should work together, connected by intelligent interfaces.
Industry 4.0 can be both a threat and an opportunity for industries. In fact, traditional businesses are faced with new challenges that will change the rules of productivity and competition. Companies must act by removing the barriers between information and physical structures. Interdisciplinary thinking is essential, both in the technical and social fields, with a continuous process of learning and collaboration, and a significant impact on professional roles. The IESM 2017 conference aims to bring together researchers and professionals to discuss and share their experience and developments around these new concepts and this new industrial revolution.
