International Conference Green Construction Technology and Engineering Education for Sustainable Future (GCEE 2017)

Construction industry is one of the industries that uses natural resources very widely. The industry that contributes to and responsible for many causes in environmental problems. Not only in term of the use of heavy equipment and the consumption of large number of fuel, but also in utilizing various natural resources. To produce concrete around the world, for example, each year it takes approximately 1.8 billion tons of cement. Meanwhile, to produce 1.8 billion tons of cement, it requires at least 3.45 billion tons of raw materials, mainly clay and limestone. Cement industry is currently estimated to contribute to around 7-8% of world’s CO2 emissions.

In the other hand, construction industry also plays an essential role in improving the environment by continuing to improve the environmental performance of any country’s buildings and infrastructure. Because of its products’ longevity, the construction industry is in a unique position to support environmental benefits both through everyday jobsite practices through lasting structural improvements and how it is taught in engineering education. Throughout this conference, the construction industry is defined as the national sector engaged in preparing construction activities which not only includes activities prior to construction, such as design, siting of buildings, or specification of materials, nor does it include the operation of structures following construction, but also educating all parties involved on how important the issues of environment in this sector.
