Introduction

Besides generalized finite element methods (G-FEM), the same ideas can analogously be applied in connection with methods based on finite cells, e.g. finite volume methods (G-FV). The proposed mini-symposium focuses on these methods: in the context of finite element-control volume discretizations, a generalisation can be achieved by introducing adapted function spaces; furthermore, by geometric adaptions of the dual mesh of a finite volume method, an adequate choice for the corresponding application is possible.
Typical applications, which require adaptions of the standard discretizations, are problems with free surfaces like moving interfaces or problems with heterogeneities within the underlying physical problem. Therefore, particulate flows with floating particles inside the fluid is a prominent example and will be one topic of the mini-symposium. Furthermore, multiphase flow demands the treatment of free surfaces and therefore the use of extended discretization schemes.
