Vortex and turbulence are basic concepts and features of fluid flow, which are widely identified and play a key role in driving and controlling the fluid motion. Through long time observation and research, human being has obtained tremendous research achievements on vortex and turbulence, especially on understanding of the macro motion in large scales. However, some of key mechanisms and characteristics are still not understood yet until now. The American Journal “Science” listed “Turbulence” as one of 125scientific puzzles which are unresolved and should be focused in the 21stcentury. As fast advancing in numerical simulation, analysis and experimental observation, a series of significant progresses in research on characteristics of vortex and identification of micro structures of turbulence are achieved recently. However, researchers feel more confused and get strayed as the research gets deepened and close to revealing the nature and truth. Inconsequence, people have felt necessity to go back, return and revisit the original basic concepts, and need to restudy some basic questions: What the nature of vortex and turbulence is? What their physics and development processes are?
In recent years, Professor Chaoqun Liu at University of Texas at Arlington, USA applied DNS to conduct tremendous research work with deep and meticulous analysis and presented a series of new theories on flow transition and turbulence structure. He also conducted detailed revisit on classical concepts like vorticity, vortex, etc. Because these new theories presented by Prof. Chaoqun Liu are different from classical and currently influential academic points of view, his new theories induced wide and hot discussions among Chinese experts of fluid dynamics and aerodynamics. In order to provide an opportunity of face-to-face discussions and academicexchanges and enhance understanding of turbulence which is a cross-century puzzle, several researchers from a number of Chinese universities and University of Texas at Arlington decided to co-sponsor a meeting: First Forum on Development and Revisit of Key Issues in Vortex and Turbulence Research, tobe hosted by University of Shanghai of Science & Technology, Shanghai,China, on December 16-17, 2017, to hold concentrated discussions on a series of fundamental concepts and most recent development on vortex and turbulence research.
