Classroom interaction is important to the learning-teaching scenario, and critical to successful learning. The classroom behaviours of both teacher and students will determine the efficacy of the pedagogical process. These behaviours include speech and those “paralinguistic devices” --gestures, facial expressions, etc. From the perspective of SFG and gesture system, the paper conducts a multimodal discourse analysis of the gestures of 4 teachers in 4 different EFL classes, and the interactions between gestures and speech by the means of MMAV software, with the four teachers being of different genders and different teaching experiences. The objectives of the study are: 1. to identify how many and what types of gestures EFL teachers as a whole employ along with their verbal communication; 2. to discover what metafunctions and meanings these gestures exert and convey in the pedagogical practices; 3.and finally to see whether there exist any striking differences concerning these characteristics among teachers of different genders and of different teaching experiences.
