Utilizing the Formative Potential of PA in Research-seminar Course for First Year Language Learners

Despite the fruitful research on portfolio assessment (PA) on writing up to now, there remains a paucity of research examining how to utilize the formative aspect of EPA in promoting students’ learning in foreign language (FL) context. Drawing upon interview and classroom observation data from a larger research project, this paper aims to explore how the formative potential of PA can be better utilized in a research-seminar course on language learning and literacy development. This paper reports the benefits students get from PA process in this particular course, such as literature reading skills, group work experience, presentation skills, academic writing skills, to name a few. The findings indicate students’ positive response to the formative aspects of PA. It also provides evidence of using PA in courses other than writing. This paper ends with a discussion on how PA can integrate teaching and assessment to benefit students’ language learning.
