Abstract
With the rapid development of science and technology, virtual reality has become a popular research topic. However, studies about the application of VR in English teaching are far from enough. Therefore, this paper analyzes several VR lessons in terms of situation simulation, interaction design and task implementation in order to explore a way to optimize TBLT with the aid of VR technology. In other words, VR can simulate a vivid daily-life environment which meets the TBLT’s need of authenticity. What’s more, a better interaction between students and teachers or even virtual collaborative agents can be achieved. Last but not least, it suggests that the VR component facilitates the implementation of TBLT principles such as those concerning task dependency, task interest, and task variety. Meanwhile, this paper discusses the merits and limitations of VR-aided English teaching. The benefits are opportunities for real-life learning experiences, learning with multimodality, and game teaching; however, the defects are lack of abstract thinking and easily distracted attention. In light of the advantages and disadvantages mentioned above, this paper expects to lay a foundation for a comprehensive integration of VR and English teaching.
