The 9th International Conference on English Language Teaching (ELT) In China (ELT2020)

This research is intended to compare production-oriented approach and traditional approach in order to find a better way to improve learners’ comprehension ability, production ability as well as language accuracy. Two classes of freshmen (n=92) in Wenzhou University were randomly distributed to each approach. The class lasted for one month, during which they had to follow the pretest, immediate post-test. One month after finishing the class, they also attended the delayed post-test. Results showed that the test group performed significantly better than the control group in comprehending words and sentences as well as producing words but not comprehending explicit grammar. Besides, they tended to perform better performance in sentence production. In terms of language accuracy, the test group had significantly better scores in the temporal adverbial clause, past perfect tense in immediate post-test, and better scores in all three forms in the delayed post-test. That is to say, production-oriented approach not only helps learners to enhance comprehension and production ability in levels of words and sentences but also their accurate usage of three language forms. However, their significantly different performance of passive voice did not show until in the delayed post-test.
