The 9th International Conference on English Language Teaching (ELT) In China (ELT2020)

This paper discusses the myths in learning and teaching English in EFL settings. For decades, English learning has been governed and misled by a belief and arguable theories that EFL and ESL are fundamentally different, and the learning process of EFL or ESL is very different from that of native speakers of English. As a result, the EFL learning and instructional process, textbook, methodology, materials, etc. were developed and designed without considering the process of acquiring and using English by native speakers of English. Thus, in most cases, EFL learning and instruction process and practice are not effective and proficient.  Instructors and learners constantly search for better methods or just look for excuses for effectiveness complaining about insufficient resources. The presenter will examine, with a new perspective, a few myths possibly contribute to the problems and issues that Chinese and other non-native speakers of English encountered in their struggle to acquire English proficiency efficiently.
