Introduction

The International Association for Statistical Education (IASE) is pleased to announce that its 12th Satellite Conference will take place from 30 August to 4 September 2021, a few weeks after the 63rd World Statistics Congress (WSC63, 11–15 July). IASE Satellites bring 80-120 folks from around the world and the host country to share their passion, expertise and experiences in statistics education.

More than ever before, analyzing the pandemic involves statistics and data science and makes visible the importance of these fields. The repositories of the top universities (like Johns Hopkins and Oxford) have shown the power of open data and open code. Data visualization tools like Gapminder and Our world in Data are freely available, as are state-of-the-art computational tools. Promoting an interest in data science and learning more about statistics in this era, individually or at school or university, should be a high priority for all of us in the field of statistics education. The pandemic provides an opportunity to revisit some old ways of doing things and perhaps bring changes that may offer something better. This is why our IASE 2021 theme, Statistics Education in the Era of Data Science, is important.

We invite you to participate in the Satellite Conference, to join us in sharing knowledge, questions, and ideas that enable us to learn from the work of esteemed colleagues from around the globe and help to advance the teaching and learning of statistics and data science. The conference will be a mixture of plenary talks, papers, poster sessions, and hands-on workshops.

The 2021 IASE satellite will be organized around the theme “Statistics Education in the Era of Data Science”. The ongoing pandemic is the first one humankind is witnessing and suffering through in modern times. The consequences of COVID-19 are everywhere, and how they will impact the future is uncertain. However, despite the tragic circumstances, the pandemic provides an opportunity to revisit some old ways of doing things and perhaps bring changes that may offer something better.

Analyzing the pandemic involves statistics and data science and makes visible the importance of these fields to everyone, at least on some level. The repositories of the top universities (like Johns Hopkins and Oxford) on GitHub have shown the power of open data and open code. Data visualization tools like Gapminder) and Our world in Data) are freely available. State-of-the-art computational tools (like R and RStudio) can be used to investigate data, and openly available materials (like datasets and R codes) can be downloaded to reproduce the steps of an analysis and produce intriguing visualizations. Promoting an interest in data science and learning more about statistics in this era of data, either individually or at school or university, should be a high priority for all of us in the field of statistical education. The following topics will be addressed:

Submission Topics

  • Topic 1: Connecting Statistics Education and Data Science
  • Topic 2: Statistical Learning from the COVID-19 Pandemic
  • Topic 3: Promoting Data Literacy and Statistical Literacy
  • Topic 4: Statistics and Data Science for Social Good
  • Topic 5: Experiences of Teaching from a Distance
