Aquaculture is an important field that includes freshwater and seawater plants and animals farming that has been intensifying over the years. Emergence of aquaculture has become a solution towards the decrement of wild aquatic animals and offers more job opportunities to the people. However, the intensification of aquaculture has brought up water quality issues like production of toxic compounds such as nitrogenous compounds due to concentrated wastes excreted or uneaten fish feeds. Water exchange, solid excretion removal or chemical addition can be the option to improve water quality in aquaculture but biological treatment is preferable application as it is cheaper, less operational processes and more environmentally friendly. Addition of bacteria can be one of the choices to reduce nitrogenous compounds as it was reported to be able to aid in removal of nitrogenous compounds. This research was conducted to show the effectiveness of treating photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) in treating synthetic wastewater. The results indicated that although ammonia (NH3),nitrite (NO2-) and nitrate (NO3-) increased over the 21 days, treatment group remained lower throughout the experimental duration compared to control group.
