Typhoons waves are critical hazard in Jiangsu coastal regions. This study aims to systematically analyze the long-term scale changes of typhoon waves in the coastal areas of Jiangsu. Using high-resolution atmospheric and wave models, we simulated typhoons and typhoon waves in the coastal areas of Jiangsu from 1950 to 2021. The models were validated by comparing the model results with satellite data, observation station data, and reanalysis data. Several characteristics of the long-term typhoon waves in Jiangsu are reported based upon analysis of model results as follows. High values of typhoon waves are mainly distributed in the central and southeastern parts of the study area. The average sea state level is mainly within level 5 (significant wave height ≤ 4m), and level 5 sea states have the widest range of occurrences. Under extreme sea conditions, level 8 sea conditions are the most common, with a maximum wave height of 25.77 meters caused by level 9 sea conditions. The proportion of typhoons passing through the coastal areas of Jiangsu is relatively small, and typhoons are most commonly seen in the range of 100-200 km from the coast of Jiangsu. Occasional occurrences of the highest level of level 9 sea conditions are within a 50 km range near the shore. The maximum effective wave height of typhoon waves in the coastal area of Jiangsu can reach 22.03 m, which occurred within the range of 200-300 km from the coast of Jiangsu in 2020.
