Oblique internal solitary wave-wave interactions near the Dongsha Atoll

In the ocean, internal solitary waves originating from different sources propagate along different directions, resulting in the possibility of oblique wave-wave interactions. Especially, near the Dongsha Atoll in the South China Sea, the complex bathymetry and varying background leading to waves being reflected, refracted, or cut off into two branches boost this possibility. Thus, this talk is devoted to the investigation of oblique internal solitary wave-wave interactions near the Dongsha Atoll from the viewpoint of theories, numerical simulations and remote sensing images. When oblique internal solitary wave-wave interactions occur, in addition to the peculiar deformation of waveforms, nonlinear effects induced by the resonance trigger the mode transfer between mode 1 and mode 2 and generate instability, which further promote the energy dissipation locally.
