Introduction

The International Symposium on River and Lake Environment (ISRLE) is the most important freshwater ecology forum in East Asia, which has expanded to encompass the entire Asian region and even the world in recent years. This conference has gained support from the International Society of Limnology. The series of conferences has been held every two to three years since 1984. The Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, successfully hosted four sessions of the conference in 1996, 1998, 2004, and 2012, achieving the goal of strengthening international cooperation and communication, and earning China a good international reputation.

The 19th International Symposium on River and Lake Environment is scheduled to be held in 2024 at the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan, China. The theme of this conference is " Limnology under Multiple Stressors." Freshwater ecosystems provide critical functions and services, but they are facing various forms of degradation globally. Multiple stressors, including eutrophication, chemical pollutants, climate change, habitat alteration, and biological invasions, are the causes of this degradation. These multiple stressors can interact and impact the physical, chemical, and biological processes of freshwater ecosystems, but the mechanisms of their combined effects are not yet clearly understood. Additionally, our understanding of complex ecological systems is limited.

The study of limnology urgently requires the development of new methods and the conduct of multifactorial, complex system, and large-scale research. This will provide scientific guidance for the better restoration and management of these fragile ecosystems. Therefore, this conference will focus on discussing the latest advancements in limnology under multiple stressors, as well as the opportunities and challenges faced. It aims to enhance academic exchanges between the limnology community in China and international counterparts, and provide new perspectives for limnological research. The conference will feature the following sub-themes:

Session 1: Responses of freshwater ecosystems to multiple stressors

Session 2: Trophic interactions and food web structures

Session 3: Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning

Session 4: New research methods and techniques in limnology

Session 5: Opportunities and challenges in collaborative limnological research
