Abstract
To enhance the protection reliability of equipment in advanced distribution systems under conditions of increased short-circuit current levels, this paper investigates the arc-extinguishing mechanism and engineering application of 12 kV expulsion fuses. First, a multi-physical field coupled simulation model of the fuse is established, revealing that the arc-extinguishing mechanism relies on the thermal decomposition of the gas-evolving coating on the inner wall of the fuse holder, which generates a pressure difference that drives a high-speed airflow to extinguish the arc. Second, the influence of key structural parameters, such as the length of the arc-shortening rod and the inner diameter of the fuse holder, on the pressure, velocity, and temperature distribution during the arcing process is analyzed through simulation. Furthermore, the structural stress during the fuse interruption process is examined, identifying the stress concentration regions and the withstand capability of critical components. On this basis, a full-scale distribution network test platform is established to conduct high-capacity short-circuit tests. The simulation and experimental results are in good agreement. Finally, integrating experimental data with standard requirements, a protection coordination method between fuses and transformers, along with principles for fuse element selection, is proposed. The research outcomes provide theoretical foundations and engineering guidance for the structural optimization, standardized design, and reliable application of expulsion fuses in distribution networks.
