Introduction

The 6th National Academic Forum for Doctoral Students in Mechanics was successfully held in Harbin from August 1–3, 2025. It was sponsored by the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, organized by Harbin Engineering University, and supported by the Zhou Peiyuan Foundation and the Editorial Office of Acta Mechanica Sinica.

Prof. Guowei He (Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences), President of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, served as the General Chair; Prof. Linzhi Wu (Harbin Engineering University) served as the Vice Chair. Over 510 experts, scholars, and doctoral students in mechanics and related fields from more than 60 universities and research institutes across China attended the forum.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Prof. Jize Mao (Harbin Engineering University). Prof. Guowei He, Prof. Yuxin Zhao (Vice President of Harbin Engineering University), and Prof. Qingguo Meng (Advisor of the Zhou Peiyuan Foundation and former Deputy Director of the Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, National Natural Science Foundation of China) delivered keynote speeches, extending warm welcome to all participants and encouraging young doctoral students to spark intellectual exchanges, showcase youthful vitality, and strive for scientific excellence. They also offered valuable advice on enhancing “independent thinking ability”, “problem-solving ability”, “knowledge updating ability”, and “communication and expression ability”.

Prof. Linzhi Wu, Prof. Qiang Tian (Beijing Institute of Technology), Prof. Lihua Shao (Beihang University), Prof. Xiaoming Liu (Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Prof. Zibing Zhang (Secretary-General of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics), and other distinguished scholars who chaired parallel sessions attended the opening ceremony.

As an annual event, the National Academic Forum for Doctoral Students in Mechanics provides an excellent platform for young scholars in mechanics. This year’s forum featured six invited plenary talks by Prof. Qingguo Meng, Prof. Qiang Tian, Prof. Fan Xu (Fudan University), Prof. Yihui Zhang (Tsinghua University), Prof. Peng Hao (Dalian University of Technology), and Prof. Xiaolei Yang (Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences), covering topics including: insights from universal laws for scientific research; modeling, computation, and experiments on deployment/assembly dynamics of large flexible space structures; morphological mechanics: growth, chirality, and curvature; fundamental mechanical issues in buckling-guided 3D micro/nano assembly; reliability-based precise structural design and life assessment; and evolution mechanisms, simulation methods, and prediction models of nonequilibrium shear turbulence.

During the forum, doctoral students from across China presented and discussed research in eight parallel sessions covering seven thematic areas: solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, dynamics and control, engineering mechanics, computational mechanics, explosion and impact mechanics, biomechanics and interdisciplinary mechanics, and intelligent mechanics—each accompanied by invited expert talks.

The closing ceremony was chaired by Prof. Jinshui Yang (Harbin Engineering University); Prof. Lihua Shao and Prof. Jize Mao delivered summary remarks. Beihang University, as the host of the next forum, received the official forum flag.

The 6th National Academic Forum for Doctoral Students in Mechanics not only offers a valuable academic exchange platform for young scholars in mechanics but also makes positive contributions to innovation and development of the discipline.
