The 4th National Academic Conference on Soft Soil Engineering was held in Wuhan, Hubei Province from November 1 to 3. The conference was jointly hosted by the Geotechnical Engineering Branch of the China Society for Civil Engineering and Hubei University of Technology. It was co-organized by the School of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environment of Hubei University of Technology, the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Perception and Ecological Restoration of Rivers and Lakes (Ministry of Education), the State Key Laboratory of Precision Blasting, and the Hubei Provincial Key Laboratory of Environmental Geotechnics and Ecological Restoration of Rivers and Lakes. Twenty-one institutions including Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan, Jianghan University, etc., served as co-organizers. The editorial offices of Chinese Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, Journal of Underground Space and Engineering, People's Yangtze River, Water Resources and Hydropower Express, and Foundation Engineering acted as co-sponsors.
Over 500 experts and scholars attended the conference, including Academician Hanlong Liu and more than 30 national-level talents. Under the theme “Carbon Sequestration and Emission Reduction, Opportunities and Challenges for Intelligent and Digital Soft Soil Engineering”, the conference featured plenary keynote reports, parallel session keynotes, technical presentations, and graduate student presentations, showcasing the latest advances in theoretical innovation and engineering practice in China’s soft soil engineering field. Fourteen renowned experts—including Academician Hanlong Liu, Prof. Maosong Huang, Prof. Gang Zheng, Prof. Songyu Liu, Chief Engineer Weidong Wang, Prof. Guanghua Yang, Prof. Changjie Xu, Prof. Bin Zhu, Prof. Yonghui Chen, Prof. Dechun Lu, Prof. Chaosheng Tang, Prof. Jun Wang, Chief Engineer Zhongjie Zhang, Chief Engineer Xingwang Liu, and Prof. Henglin Xiao—delivered plenary keynote reports. Additionally, the conference included 6 parallel sessions and 2 graduate student sessions, hosting a total of 34 parallel keynotes, 57 technical presentations, and 38 graduate student presentations—making 144 presentations in total.
The National Academic Conference on Soft Soil Engineering is a premier academic event in China’s soft soil engineering community. Three previous editions have been successfully held: the 1st Conference (November 2013, Tongji University) focused on “Theoretical Innovation and Engineering Practice in Soft Soil Engineering”; the 2nd Conference (November 2017, Tianjin University) centered on “Performance and Safety of Soft Soil Engineering”; and the 3rd Conference (March 2023, Southeast University) addressed “Intelligent Construction in Soft Soil Engineering”. The conference aims to foster academic exchange among soft soil engineering professionals nationwide, summarize and showcase the latest research progress, outcomes, and development trends, share novel ideas, stimulate innovative thinking, broaden perspectives, and further advance theoretical and practical development in China’s soft soil engineering field toward sustainable growth.
