Introduction

From August 11 to 14, 2025, the 2nd International Workshop of Multi-Scale, Multi-Media & Multi-Physics Rheology (M³Rheo 2025 – AI, High Performance Computing and Quantitative Verification) was successfully held in Tianjin, China. This workshop was sponsored by the Division of Rheology of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and the Chinese Chemical Society; organized by the School of Mechanical Engineering, Tianjin University, and the National Key Laboratory of Automotive Power System; and supported by the National Key Laboratory of Advanced Internal Combustion Engine, Tianjin Society of Renewable Energy, and Harbin Engineering University. Over 200 experts, young researchers, and students from universities and research institutes worldwide—specializing in rheology, mechanics, engineering thermophysics, and related fields—attended the event. The opening ceremony was held on the morning of August 12, hosted by Prof. Zhengxian Liu, Vice Dean of the School of Mechanical Engineering, Tianjin University, and Co-Chair of the conference. Co-Chairs Prof. Fengchen Li (Tianjin University) and Prof. Liao Liang Ke (Dean, School of Mechanical Engineering), along with Prof. Xuefeng Yuan (Chairman of the Division of Rheology, Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics), delivered opening remarks, highlighting rheology’s bridging role between fundamental science and engineering applications—especially under the frontier convergence of artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and quantitative experimental verification. Themed “Multi-Scale, Multi-Media & Multi-Physics Rheology”, the workshop focused on foundational research and industrial applications of complex fluids across disciplines. It featured a plenary hall and three parallel sessions—including a dedicated session for young students—covering topics such as stability and turbulence of viscoelastic fluids, multi-scale modeling and simulation of complex fluids, and rheology and applications of complex fluids. Plenary talks were chaired by Prof. Jinjun Zhang (China University of Petroleum, Beijing) and Prof. Fengchen Li (Tianjin University). Invited speakers included Prof. Rich Kerswell (University of Cambridge, UK), Prof. Hengdong Xi (Northwestern Polytechnical University), Prof. Björn Hof (Institute of Science and Technology Austria), and Assoc. Prof. Hongna Zhang (Tianjin University). Invited talks in parallel sessions were delivered by Prof. Victor Steinberg (Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel), Prof. Viswanathan Shankar (Indian Institute of Technology), Prof. Jonathan James Wylie (City University of Hong Kong), Prof. Hongxia Guo (Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Prof. Weitao Wu (Nanjing University of Science and Technology), Prof. Zhiguo Wang (Xi’an Shiyou University), Assoc. Prof. Li Xi (McMaster University, Canada), Assoc. Prof. Mirko Gallo (Sapienza University of Rome, Italy), Assoc. Prof. Mengqi Zhang (National University of Singapore), and Assoc. Prof. Xiaobin Li (Tianjin University), among others. The workshop showcased cutting-edge advances in rheology, non-Newtonian fluid mechanics, and multiphase flow & heat transfer at both scientific and engineering frontiers. The M³Rheo series aims to provide an international platform for academic exchange and collaboration among researchers in rheology, non-Newtonian fluid mechanics, and multiphase flow—and also serves as a preparatory event for the 20th International Congress on Rheology (ICR2027), to be held in Guangzhou, China, in June 2027. The 18th National Conference on Rheology and the 3rd M³Rheo International Workshop will be organized by Prof. Yongliang Xiong’s team at Huazhong University of Science and Technology at the end of August 2026—researchers worldwide are warmly invited to participate.
