Introduction
The IASS, founded by Eduardo Torroja in 1959, has as its goal the achievement of further progress through an interchange of ideas among all those interested in lightweight structural systems such as lattice, tension, membrane, and shell structures. The continuing development of design, analysis, and construction techniques of shell and spatial structures has resulted in an increasing fund of information of practical interest to architects, engineers, and builders. To this end, organizes conferences and symposia, publishes journal and other reports, and also presents awards to recognize outstanding achievements. The Association welcomes to membership all individuals and organizations who share its aims. More about IASS on website: www.iass-structures.org Recent trends in architectural design have posed new challenges for designers. The unconstrained creation of forms has become a new aesthetical paradigm: architectonic requirements have stimulated the search for new types of structures which, in turn, have brought about novel architectonic forms. The Symposium is intended as a forum for the exchange and promotion of new ideas as well as for discussion about the mutual influence of architectonic and engineering demands on the creation of unique architecture by means of lightweight structures.
