Introduction

The General Chairs and Organizing Committee of the 2013 IEEE 56th International Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems (MWSCAS 2013) are delighted to have you join us at our conference in the Ohio Union at the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio August 4-7, 2013. This Symposium is the oldest Circuits and Systems Symposium sponsored by the IEEE CAS Society. We will contribute to its strong history by reporting the latest research results and innovations in the field of circuits and systems through multidisciplinary plenary talks featuring the newest innovations relevant to this field and shedding light on its evolution with a focus on the conference theme of green technologies. In addition, the conference includes tutorials and special sessions addressing emerging topics in circuit and systems given by experts in the field, oral presentations on most current topics, interactive poster sessions, exhibits, and a student paper contest. We would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the conference and the technical programs, to all members of the organizing committee, the track chairs, the reviewers, the special session organizers and the session chairs. We would like to thank the Ohio State University, the University of Cincinnati and KUSTAR, UAE for their support. We are proud to host you in Columbus, Ohio, the capital of the state of Ohio and the home of the Ohio State University, the flagship institution of the Ohio University System. Our 2013 Symposium returns MWSCAS to its Midwestern "roots" in the center of our state of Ohio, which is at "the heart of it all". Columbus is a dynamic city with a major university (Ohio State), a strong technical sector, and attractive cultural institutions. It is easily accessible by plane (with daily nonstop flights from 30 major U.S. cities) or by interstate highway (71 N/S, 70 E/W). There is a strong, vibrant technical community in Columbus and the surrounding area. In the long tradition of MWSCAS, student authors are welcomed and the traditional student paper contest is a central part of the symposium. Since 2005, when MWSCAS was held in Cincinnati, OH, the Symposium will have been held in a wide variety of geographic locations, none in the "Midwest"--Puerto Rico, Montreal, Knoxville, Seattle, Cancun, Seoul, and Boise. The Columbus location provides an opportunity for the many faculty, students and researchers in Ohio and surrounding states to attend a conveniently located first-class conference. It also gives national and international visitors a superior conference experience in an area of diverse industries with good job growth along with cutting edge research in energy & environment and medical bio-nanotechnology being pursued in the region's universities, government labs and industries.
