Introduction
The idea to organize an international conference on applied mathematics and informatics in San Andres Island was initially proposed by the mathematicians from 16 Colombian universities that have participated in the XI International Conference “Approximation and Optimization in the Caribbean”, held in San Andres Island during March 2-7, 2008. This initiative has then required another 18 months to get matured and fully discussed among the academic circles of Colombia. A formal proposal to create a new series of international academic events called “International Conference on Applied Mathematics and Informatics – ICAMI” was then presented by Universidad del Valle to the Board of the REALMA Network (Réseau Europa – Amérique Latine en Maths Appliques, http://www.univ-ag.fr/aoc/realma/). The name for this series was suggested by Professor Jürgen GUDDAT (Humboldt University, Berlin – Germany) who is one of the founders of three other sequences of academic events. In 2009, ICAMI was designated as an official series of academic events of the REALMA Network to be organized every three years starting from 2010. First conference of the ICAMI series took place in San Andres, Colombia during November 28 – December 3, 2010 and was attended by 271 participants from 23 different countries.
