Introduction

The 12th edition of the IEEE International Symposium on RObotic and Sensors Environments, ROSE 2014, will take place at the Politehnica University of Timişoara, Romania, on 16 - 18 October 2014. Timişoara is the capital city of Timiş County and the largest city in western Romania, with a population of over 320000 inhabitants. It is located on the banks of the Bega River, being built on the site of an ancient Roman fortress, "Castrum Regium Themes". Timişoara has a long and rich history as an important commercial, industrial and multi-cultural center. It is the first city in Europe and the second in the world to use electrical street lighting in 1884, the first European city with state theatres in three languages (Romanian, German and Hungarian) in 1953, and the city which started the Revolution of December 1989, to restore the democratic values in Romania. Timisoara is easily accessible by car or train, and well connected to major hubs via the Traian Vuia International airport. Politehnica University of Timişoara, established in 1920 by Royal Decree of King Ferdinand I, is one of the most prominent universities in Romania. With its ten faculties, four independent departments and over 1700 teaching and administrative staff, it provides top level support for more than 15000 students. The focus of the ROSE conference series is on sensing systems and technologies for robotics and industrial automation, as well as their impact on autonomous robotics and intelligent systems development and applications.
