Introduction

The rapidly growing demand on wireless data calls for intelligent design of wireless communications and networks. One of the key challenges we face is the “spectrum shortage” due to rapid development of various wireless systems that have created unprecedented demand for commercial access to wireless spectrum. Another challenge is how to achieve intelligent access to the best available networks for meeting various demands. Through introducing artificial intelligence technologies into communications and networks design, cognitive radio and networks are expected to solve these key challenges and beyond. This symposium invites the state-of-the-art research on signal processing for cognitive radio and networks. Both theoretical contributions (including new models, architectures, protocols, tools, concepts, and analyses) and practical contributions (including new techniques, prototypes, deployment, system experiments, and new applications) are welcome.
