Introduction

Welcome to the 41st Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference (NEBEC) held at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY. RPI is home to one of the oldest Biomedical Engineering programs in the country and is proud to be hosting NEBEC for the second time in recent history. Rensselaer's historic and 21st Century buildings have housed an ongoing bio-renaissance. Biomedical Engineering is supported and enhanced by extensive collaborations with our other research centers: Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies, Nanotechnology Innovation, the Biomedical Imaging Center, the Center for Modeling, Simulation & Imaging in Medicine, and the Center for Stem Cell Research. Our dynamic educational approach is reflected by the size of the Biomedical Engineering Department; it has nearly doubled in just the past few years. For this year's NEBEC, we have arranged an attractive program designed to generate ideas , further scholarship and promote networking. Our session tracks are concentrated in the following areas: Biomedical Imaging, BioMEMS and On-Chip Devices, Biocatalysis and Metabolic Engineering, Stem Cells & Regenerative Medicine, Biomechanics, Systems Biology & Synthetic Biology, Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering, and Modeling and Control of Biomedical Systems. The conference will include distinguished plenary speakers, oral and poster presentations of accepted papers, a student paper competition and a senior design competition. In addition, we have collaborated with the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) to offer a Career Connections Conference as part of the Friday program. Career Connections will provide a wealth of career information and networking opportunities. Students and recent graduates will learn about careers from alumni working in industry, academia, government, law and medicine. Attendees will learn about full-time opportunities and current students can hear about intern/coop programs.
