Introduction

The coastal zone is an area of particular ecological, social, and economic value, where many conflicting interests need to be resolved in order to ensure a sustainable development of this highly dynamic and complex environment. Coastal zones natural systems provide more than half of the global ecosystem goods (e.g., fish, oil, minerals) and services (e.g., natural protection from storms and tidal waves, recreation), whilst they are also facing numerous challenges (e.g., coastal erosion, sea water intrusion, shortening of water and sediment discharge, large scale reclamation) and threatens (e.g., eutrophication, hypoxia, pollution, sea level rise). The coastal zone biodiversity, productive habitats and major biogeochemical processes support the life, welfare and health of a growing part of the global population but this depends on maintaining the coastal environment and functions. The Land-Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone and Sustainable Development Workshop (LOICZ&SDW) will provide an opportunity for researchers, regulators, scientists, students, engineers, private and public sectors to present recent research findings and to exchange information on assess, anticipate and respond to the interaction of global change and local pressures which determine coastal change.
