Introduction

MIMO with a large number of antennas placed in a 2D array at the base station called e.g. Full Dimension MIMO (FD-MIMO) or 3D MIMO is one technology to increase system capacity in LTE-Advanced systems. The idea is to use both azimuth and elevation to exploit all the spatial dimensions of the MIMO channel. A large number of antenna elements improves the capability of shaping a narrow beam resulting in possibility of enhanced multiuser MIMO operations leading to a preliminary implementation of massive MIMO. As the fourth generation (4G), namely LTE-Advanced, is becoming widely deployed, the research community and mobile industry are now looking into future 5G technologies. Antennas and massive MIMO will play an even more important role in 5G systems both at lower frequencies (< 6 GHz) and at higher frequencies (> 25 GHz).
