Introduction

Electrons have played a central role in the scientific and technological revolution of the 20th century. However, our insight into and influence upon the atomic-scale motion of electrons in matter is still in its infancy. Electronic motion inside atoms is behind the emission of x-ray light. Electronic dynamics on the molecular scale is responsible for the transport of bioinformation and initiates changes in the chemical composition and function of biological systems. The advance of science and technology by research on electrons under unprecedented ultrafast time scale is just beginning. Attosecond science arises under such background in the beginning of this century, allowing observation and steering of electron motion with attosecond time resolution. Compared with femtosecond chemistry which wins the 1999 Nobel Prize, the temporal resolution of the observation of ultrafast process can be improved by 1000 times, expecting to revolutionize physics, chemistry and information technology. The Sino-German Symposium on Attosecond Photonics 2015 (SGSAP2015) is organized by leading scientists in the field of attosecond science. Main organizers include Professor Ya Cheng from Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, CAS and Dr. Goulielmakis Eleftherios from Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics. The SGSAP2015 is unique in that it provides an opportunity for researchers to exchange ideas and techniques, and fosters discussion on a variety of topics including attosecond science, next generation of attosecond sources, attosecond time-resolved molecular dynamics, application of attosecond photonics, and attosecond physics in solids.
