Introduction

The Institute of Modern History (IMH) at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (Beijing) and the Historical Society for Twentieth-Century China (HSTCC) in the United States jointly invite world-wide participation in a symposium, “Modern China in World Affairs: Interaction and Mutual Influence,” to be held in Beijing, China on August 19-21, 2016. This collaborative undertaking constitutes the HSTCC 2016 biennial meeting and the 6th IMH international conference on the modern history of Chinese foreign relations. Room and board will be subsidized with conference registration fees waived for HSTCC members.

Individual and panel proposals are sought to address—but are not limited to—the following thematic questions: How did modern China become part of global history? Are scholarly findings and insights on modern Chinese history from the last four decades adequate for our understanding of the past and present? How does China perceive its modern experience with international norms and institutions? How does the outside world view modern China’s role in shaping global systems?

An individual proposal consists of a paper title (no more than 20 words), an abstract (250 words), a short bio (up to 150 words), and contact information (name, affiliation, position, and mailing and e-mail addresses). A regular panel should have three to five presenters, including a chair and a commentator who may also be paper-givers. A complete panel proposal should include: a panel title (no more than 20 words), a panel abstract (up to 300 words), individual paper titles (no more than 20 words for each panelist) and abstracts (250 words for each paper), a biographical paragraph (up to 150 words for each participant), and the affiliation, position, mailing and email address for each participant. Paper givers are strongly encouraged to present their papers in PowerPoint either in English or Chinese at the conference
