Introduction

Who Should Attend

All geoscientists that want understand carbonate deposition and sequence stratigraphy applied to carbonates.

Objectives

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Carbonate facies

  • Carbonate diagenesis

  • Sequence stratigraphy for carbonates

This two-day workshop provides an introduction to the application of carbonate facies, diagenesis, and seismic sequence stratigraphy to exploration and production. This includes marine and lacustrine systems, and conventional and unconventional carbonate reservoirs. The workshop combines seismic, well log and rock data, and the concepts of sequence stratigraphy to develop interpretations that help predict carbonate hydrocarbon systems, and characterize carbonate reservoirs and seals. At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to integrate carbonate and sequence stratigraphy principles to their work.

The workshop covers:

  1. a review of the different carbonate platform types (i.e., ramps, prograding banks, and rimmed platforms, both isolated and attached) and their different seismic facies

  2. an introduction to carbonate sequence stratigraphy and the seismic facies and attributes of carbonate reservoirs and seals

  3. the recognition of karst using seismic data

  4. lacustrine systems and carbonates. Exercises will illustrate these topics and include integrated seismic-well log-rock examples.

The workshop is designed for geologists and geophysicists who are exploring for and developing oil and gas fields in carbonate systems. Some experience with carbonate rocks is helpful. Particularly appropriate for those desiring to integrate seismic, well logs and core data to develop predictive models for carbonate systems.
