Introduction

Tissue engineering and the broader field of regenerative medicine attract researchers from various scientific disciplines who aim to assemble functional constructs that restore, maintain, or enhance damaged tissues and whole organs. Complex tissues such as those of the heart, lung, liver, and eye have been successfully recreated in the lab; yet these are a long way from being ready to implant into a patient and show therapeutic success. This conference will discuss recent advances and current challenges in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine: from the understanding of the cellular microenvironment; to the design, making, and monitoring of scaffold materials and engineered tissues; to the healing of body tissues and organs. The scientific programme of the conference will be divided in three sessions. These will cover the topics of cell–material interactions, stem cell mechanobiology, extracellular-matrix mimics, tissue models, bioelectronic interfaces, three-dimensional bioprinting, soft-tissue regeneration, orthopaedic tissue engineering and tissue imaging. In addition, there will be a round-table discussion with invited speakers, as well as plenty of time for informal discussions during coffee breaks, meals and social events.
