Introduction

Mechanical properties of nanomaterials and design of nanodevices have attracted great scientific interests as nanomaterials are distinctly different in both properties and functions from their macroscopic counterparts especially under multi-field. Having a deep insight into these peculiar functions and coupled properties is crucial to realizing innovative nanotechnology. At nanoscale, atoms are hold together to form different materials and devices through short range interactions such as chemical bonds and long  range interactions such as the van der Waals force and electromagnetic interactions. Quantum mechanics is powerful to describe the short range interactions of materials at the nanometer scale, while molecular mechanics and dynamics based on empirical potentials are able to simulate material behaviors at much large scales. Theoretical computation and simulation containing quantum mechanics, molecular dynamics, finite element and continuum mechanics, which comes from physics and mechanics, have played an important role in elucidating and exploring exceptional physical and mechanical properties of nanomaterials and nanodevices. How to effectively use, combine and develop those methods will be very helpful to the development of mechanics at nanoscale. The aim of this symposium is to provide an interdisciplinary platform to discuss and communicate the latest researches on physical mechanics of nanomaterials and nanodevices, and the latest advance in theoretical method and technique, which will  engender new collaboration and will facilitate the advance of multiscale physical mechanics.
