The visual measurement of submerged model terrain surface is vital for the analysis of riverbed erosion and deposition. This paper describes a novel method of measuring submerged model terrain surface in the B-mode ultrasound image obtained using a B-mode ultrasound imaging device. The distribution of gray values in B-mode ultrasound image has a mutation process. The mutation process can be used to adaptively track the submerged model terrain surface between riverbed and water flow. Results have shown that the measurement accuracy of submerged model terrain surface is within 1 mm by comparing with the actual model terrain. This paper realized the measurement of submerged model terrain surface in sediment-laden water flow with the advantage of good self-adaptation, fast speed and high resolution. In particular, it is visible and intuitive for muddy water in the movable-bed model experiment.
