Introduction

Earthquakes, as one of the major natural disastrous hazards, have been imposed significant threat to the economic well-being and life security of our society. The lessons learned from previous earthquakes have promoted the development of earthquake engineering. With the great efforts from pioneer researchers including Professor Muto Kiyoshi, Professor George W. Housner, Professor Joseph Penzien and Professor Huixian Liu, etc, significant progress has been made in earthquake engineering in the last several decades. However, new problems and challenges have been identified in the both scientific research and engineering practice, especially in seismic analyses and design of large and complicated structures, after recent earthquakes, such as the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, Chile earthquake, and the 2011 Japan Tohoku earthquake. Inheritance and innovation are two important aspects in the progress of science and technology. International corporations and communications has been proved to be effective in achieving the common target and become the major trend of the future development in the field of earthquake engineering. Therefore, Huixian International Forum on Earthquake Engineering for Young Researchers was proposed by Huixian and US-China Earthquake Engineering Foundation , aiming at commemorating the pioneers in earthquake engineering and providing the young researchers a platform of information communication, knowledge sharing, and research collaboration. The first forum was held successfully at Institute of Engineering Mechanics, Harbin, China, in 2014. The second forum will be held at Beijing University of Technology, Beijing, China, in 2016. The academic committee of the forum sincerely invite the young scholars all over the world to attend this forum.
