Introduction

Non-graphene two-dimensional (2D) materials with atomic scale thickness have emerged as a new frontier of material science. In particular, two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) materials and phosphorene present an attractive atomic-scale semiconductor. These materials have the potential to enable the ultimate scaling in the vertical direction for all the semiconductor devices and to enable functionalities that cannot be obtained with the existing materials. The key for successfully developing the novel atomic-scale devices is to understand the fundamental properties of the 2D materials, including the properties related with electrons, photons, and phonons. This symposium is mainly dedicated to promoting communication among the researchers working on 2D transition metal dichalcogenide and phosphorene. It will also address other important emerging non-grapene 2D materials such as carbides, nitrides, and borographene.
