The Good College EFL Teacher Images

The past decades have witnessed increasing importance of foreign language competence in the People's Republic of China (PRC). In particular, university graduates with high proficiency in English are in greater demand than ever. The effectiveness of college EFL teachers has accordingly become a crucial issue. This study aims to depict the good college EFL teacher images and investigate the essential qualities that make a good college EFL teacher in China. With the criteria of students’ evaluation of teaching, 4 good college EFL teachers who have ranked top 15% among all the teachers for more than 7 times in recent five years have been invited to participate in the study. The images of good EFL teachers have been depicted from a wide range of data including interviews of teachers and students, questionnaires of students and videotaped classroom teaching. With the help of multimodal analysis and discourse analysis, using ELAN, NVivo and SPSS, the classroom behaviors and personalities of these good teachers have been analyzed. Because so few empirical studies on such a topic have been conducted in a Chinese context, this research is expected to stimulate Chinese academics to pay more attention to the qualities of a good EFL college teacher. It is also hoped that the results of this research can help facilitate mutual understanding among teachers and students. Chinese teachers' teaching performance can be improved and Chinese students' learning outcomes can be enhanced.
