Introduction

The DESWeb workshop on "Data Engineering meets the Semantic Web" aims at bridging the gap between the recent advent of Semantic Web technologies and the well-established database techniques. As it has been proved over the last years through several publications and commercial or open source products, there is great potential for mutual learning and cross-fertilization from these two research communities. Given recent developments on the Linked (Open) Data initiative, Web-scale semantic graphs, and related trends, freeing up these synergies to tackle the challenges ahead is more important than ever.
